Let me start at the begining.....
Breck, Taylor, and I decided to walk over to the school and have lunch with Kaicee. On the way home, we were all racing each other and being silly. Breck was winning, so I decided to pick Taylor up....by her hands....and swing her around in an attempt to catch up. That's were the problem was! In an innocent attempt to have fun with my girls, I dislocated her arm!!!!
This is not the first time this has happened. The morning of her 1st birthday party was also spent in the ER for the same reason....only that time we weren't sure exactly how it had happened. The Dr told us that "nurse maid elbow" is very common in little kids. It usually happens when they are picked up by their wrist instead of under their arms. However, sometimes at a young age, they can dislocate the arm by simply rolling over wrong in their crib. The first time we went, Taylor had actually put it back into place on her own by the time we got to the ER...also very common.
Well, this time....mommy was the bad guy! Since she has had this happen once already, her chances of it happening again are greater. I decided to lay her down for her nap and see how she felt when she woke up, thinking that maybe she was just overly tired and I had just pulled a bit too hard. When she woke up from her nap still crying and refusing to move her arm, I decided to call our family doctor. They advised us to go to the ER in case we had to have xrays. So, we loaded up and headed to the ER. On the way, she seemed to cheer up a bit and even started to move it a little once we were there. The Dr came in, held onto her elbow and gently twisted her wrist....viola! We had a new, happy little girl!
After popping it back into place, we had to stay for a few minutes to make sure she was using it ok. She was instantly walking around and trying to get in to everything! Good thing we packed some books!
At Family Camp one year I was running with Landen and lifting him over the goose poop and he landed wrong and broke his leg. I felt horrible.
ReplyDeleteI'm glad Taylor is OK.
Don't blame yourself! When Drew was just a toddler, he flipped out of a shopping cart in the middle of Target. Weeks later, we discovered that his tailbone was pinching his sciatic nerve. Finally, after many missed diagnoses, a chiropractor popped it in place, giving him relief. Also, when Drew was a toddler, he broke his collarbone. I didn't realize it at the time and discovered weeks later when the doctor took an xray that it had happened and that the bone had already healed! The only clue Drew gave us was crying every time we picked him up or buckled him in his car seat. And then there was the time when Curt accidentally broke Brock's leg. And the time when I scratched Nicole's nose and left a scar. And the time when Ryne's head got caught under the bed and I couldn't figure out how to get it out (duh - lift the bed). I should stop now. Someone might call child protective services on me!
